Remote Learning

Iโ€‹f for any reason, there is a full or partial school closure (other than planned industrial action), Mill Green School will provide our learners with access to remote learning, including access to the Google Classroom virtual platform and live lessons by TEAMS.

Information for Parents

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

In the event of school closing or partially closing, there will be a timetable outlining the daily links needed to accessย immediate fully sequenced learning. This may also include live Teams lessons with your child’s class teacher.

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we may need to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, Art and Design or Science lessons may be adapted if specialised resources are required to deliver the curriculum effectively.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take young people broadly the following number of hours each day, however this is dependent on the need of the young persons and their stage of learning:

Key Stage 4 5 hours daily
Key Stage 5 5 hours daily

What is taught to my child at home?

The learning we have chosen mirrors the content that would otherwise have been delivered in school as part of our already-planned curriculum.

Where possible, lessons will mirror the format we use in school therefore allowing the children to immediately access familiar learning . As part of our remote learning offer we will also use the government recommended Oak National Online Classroom which links to a number of our curriculum areas. Oak National provides sequenced lessons delivered by teachers with a pre-recorded video, offering direct teaching with modelling and explanations, quizzes and worksheets. If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

If you do not have access to a device or internet and this prevents your child from accessing their remote education, call the school office immediately on 01744 678760 or email on millgreen@millgreen.org.uk and we will support you.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach young people remotely:

– live Teams sessions with our teaching and support staff

– pre-recorded video/audio lessons by our teachers

Oak National Academy lessons

– individually prepared printed paper packs produced by teachers (where applicable)

Google Classroom

– practical activity instructions that can be accessed in the home e.g. Preparation for Adulthood tasks

What are your expectations for my childโ€™s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

The expectation is that if your child is not in school due to closure, they must be engaging in daily remote learning.

It is advised that you utilise the timetable produced, and published on the school website (links will be shared) to establish a routine that works for you, your child and your family circumstances. If any support is required please contact school.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

When your child has completed their work they will take a photograph of it and upload onto their Google Classroom, an online platform we already use in school, for the teacher to check and to offer your child feedback. This will be monitored daily and children’s usage is monitored and recorded. If there are any concerns regarding engagement or understanding, your child’s class teacher will contact you to discuss.

Parents/carers also have the opportunity to contact teachers ,with any concerns, by calling school.

How will you assess my childโ€™s work and progress?

Teachers and education staff also offer verbal and written feedback , where appropriate, based on the work the children upload or have engaged with during a live session. Dependent on practice that your child is familiar with, they may be asked to correct (using a different colour pen) and to re-submit their corrected piece of work.

Your child’s work will be checked daily, so feedback can be given, if appropriate, before the next day’s lesson.

If there are any concerns regarding your child’s understanding, your child’s class teacher will contact you to discuss and offer further support for you and your child.

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some young people may find it difficult to access remote education without extensive support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

– By ensuring the remote education meets the needs of your child (e.g. linked to PLIP targets, Pupil Profiles and EHCP areas of need) and is tailored to be accessed at home

– By offering an alternative format if appropriate- e.g. paper-based learning, interactive etc

– By communicating and working closely with families and working together to reach an appropriate arrangement for remote education for your child

– Take advice and guidance from external agencies, where appropriate, to support families

For any queries regarding remote education please contact our Curriculum and Remote Education Lead on catherine.king@millgreen.org.uk
